Social Networking Software/Platforms
This is a list of social media software vendors and free platforms online to host your associations Social Networking adventures. If there is something I'm missing, or you would like me to include your comments (positive & negative accepted) please let me know.
Looking to create an in-house social network? Try these products:
Higher Logic - I have participated in a demo for them before and I think they have good products, you just need make sure that you know Social Media will work with your association. Make sure it's the right choice for you.
Member Fuse - Haven't had personal experience with their products, but
Sterling Raphael is a member of the network and I'm sure he'd be pleased to tell you about it!
Socious - I find their site a long-winded to navigate (I like to get to the good stuff!), but once I found their listing of products all was good.
These listed focus mainly on the association world. Also, look to
TechCrunch to provide some answers about pay software.
Don't have a line item in the budget yet? Free Online Sources:
In the spirit of Social Media, here are some free sites where you can get started or start playing with Social Networking. Also, check out this
excellent post on TechCrunch regarding free services.
Ning.com - Where SNAP is located. You can judge for yourself on this one.
Collective X - Has some really nice features, but I feel it can get overwhelming and confusing, especially if you belong to more than one groupsite. Yapstar.org is a great example of a well done Collective X Groupsite.
Not ready for a full-blown social network? Try creating groups on the following sites that your members already use!
LinkedIn - Doesn't provide a whole lot of engagement between members, but does provide a badge on the group members profile page, basically an online resume.
Facebook - Orginally started as an online college yearbook, Facebook has spread to the far reaches of society. There is a good chance that people you know are already on Facebook and it's very possible that you have an opportunity for a new base of prospective member.
